The Dawn Launch

Picked up from your lodge before first light, you arrive at the launch site as the balloon is being inflated. Watch the enormous envelope fill with hot air under a canopy of stars. As the pilot calls "all aboard," you climb into the basket and gently lift off the ground into the Serengeti dawn.

The Flight

For approximately one hour, you float between 30 and 300 meters above the plains. The silence is profound, broken only by occasional burner blasts. Below, herds of wildebeest and zebra begin their morning movements, elephants head to water and the sunrise transforms the landscape into a canvas of gold and amber.

Your Morning

The balloon safari timeline

Here is exactly what your hot air balloon morning looks like, from pickup to return.

4:30 AM — Pickup

Our driver collects you from your lodge or camp and drives to the launch site. Hot coffee and tea are served while the crew prepares the balloon under the starlit sky.

5:30 AM — Launch

After a safety briefing, you board the basket. The pilot fires the burners and you gently ascend into the Serengeti dawn. The sunrise unfolds in spectacular fashion as you gain altitude.

6:30 AM — Landing

After approximately one hour of flight, the pilot selects a landing site on the open plains. The crew meets you with a champagne toast and a certificate commemorating your flight.

7:00 AM — Bush Breakfast

A full English bush breakfast is served on the savanna with white tablecloths, champagne and fresh juices. Surrounded by the morning Serengeti, it is the most memorable breakfast of your life.

Photography

Capturing the flight from above

A balloon safari offers photography opportunities that are impossible from any other vantage point. Here are tips for the best aerial images.

Camera Settings

Use a fast shutter speed (1/500+) as the balloon does move gently. A wide-angle lens (16-35mm) captures the vast landscape, while a medium zoom (70-200mm) is ideal for wildlife from above. Shoot in RAW for maximum editing flexibility in the dramatic lighting.

Best Moments

The most dramatic shots come during the first 10 minutes of sunrise when the sky blazes with color. Shadow play on the plains, the balloon's own shadow on the ground and aerial views of animal herds create unique compositions you cannot get elsewhere.

Safety Tips

Use a camera strap at all times since a dropped camera is lost forever. Avoid changing lenses mid-flight. Smartphones with telephoto capability work surprisingly well. The pilot accommodates photography requests when safe to do so.

FAQ

Balloon safari questions

Everything you need to know about hot air balloon flights over the Serengeti.

When do balloon flights take off?
Balloon flights launch just before dawn, typically around 5:30-6:00 AM, to catch the calm morning air and the spectacular sunrise over the Serengeti. You are picked up from your lodge or camp at approximately 4:30 AM. The early start is essential for safety (wind conditions) and produces the most breathtaking lighting for photography.
How long does the balloon flight last?
The flight itself lasts approximately one hour, floating at altitudes between 30 and 300 meters depending on wind conditions and wildlife sightings. The entire experience (from pickup to return) takes about 4-5 hours, including the pre-flight briefing, the flight, landing, and a champagne bush breakfast served on the savanna after landing.
How much does a balloon safari cost?
Balloon flights in the Serengeti typically cost between $500 and $600 USD per person, which includes hotel pickup, the flight, a champagne bush breakfast and a certificate. This is a premium experience that is widely considered one of the highlights of any Tanzania safari. Check our prices page for current rates and package options.
Is a balloon safari safe?
Yes, balloon safaris in Tanzania have an excellent safety record. Flights are operated by licensed pilots with thousands of hours of experience. All balloons undergo daily inspections and meet international aviation standards. Flights are cancelled if wind conditions exceed safety thresholds. The pilot briefs all passengers on safety procedures and landing positions before takeoff.
What should I wear for a balloon safari?
Wear layered clothing as early mornings can be cool (around 15 celsius) but the balloon burners generate significant heat. Long trousers and closed-toe shoes are required. Bring a warm jacket, sunglasses and a hat. Cameras with secure straps are welcome but avoid loose items. The basket is spacious but sturdy shoes help with the landing.
How many people fit in the balloon basket?
Standard baskets carry 12-16 passengers divided into compartments, each with excellent viewing positions. Private flights for couples or small groups (2-4 people) are available at a premium. All passengers have unobstructed views and photography opportunities. The pilot positions the balloon to optimize wildlife viewing throughout the flight.
What happens if the flight is cancelled due to weather?
Safety is the top priority, and flights may be cancelled if wind speeds exceed safe limits. If your flight is cancelled, you receive a full refund or the option to reschedule for another morning (subject to availability). Weather cancellations are uncommon during the dry season (June-October) but slightly more frequent during the green season.
