The Experience

What to expect on a classic safari

A classic Tanzanian safari is a journey through some of the most biodiverse landscapes on Earth, guided by experts who bring the bush to life.

Serengeti golden savanna with scattered acacia trees at sunrise

Dawn Game Drives

Set out at first light when the savanna awakens. Lions return from their nightly hunts, elephants emerge from the bush and the Serengeti transforms under the golden morning sun. Your guide reads the landscape like a book, tracking fresh prints and listening for alarm calls.

Ngorongoro Crater floor with wildlife and lush vegetation

Ngorongoro Crater Descent

Descend 600 meters into the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, a natural amphitheater teeming with approximately 25,000 animals. The crater floor offers the highest density of wildlife in Africa, including the endangered black rhino in its natural habitat.

FAQ

Classic safari questions

Everything you need to know about our classic game drive safaris in Tanzania.

What is a classic safari in Tanzania?
A classic safari is the traditional African game drive experience. You travel in a custom 4x4 vehicle (usually a Toyota Land Cruiser) with a pop-up roof through national parks and game reserves. Your expert guide spots wildlife, explains animal behavior and navigates to the best viewing locations. Classic safaris in Tanzania typically visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.
How many days do I need for a classic safari?
While we offer day safaris from Arusha, we recommend a minimum of 3 days to experience the Serengeti properly. A 5-day safari allows you to explore both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro at a comfortable pace. For the ultimate experience, a 7-day expedition adds Lake Manyara and Tarangire. Check our prices page for multi-day packages.
What animals will I see on a classic safari?
The Serengeti and Ngorongoro are home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. You will also commonly see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, cheetahs, warthogs, baboons and hundreds of bird species. During migration season (July-September), you may witness millions of wildebeest and zebras crossing the Serengeti.
What is included in a classic safari package?
All our classic safari packages include: hotel/airport pickup and drop-off, a certified English-speaking guide, a custom 4x4 vehicle with pop-up roof, all national park fees, packed lunch and snacks, unlimited bottled water and binoculars. Multi-day safaris also include full-board accommodation at quality lodges or tented camps. See full details on our prices page.
Is the classic safari suitable for families with children?
Yes! Classic safaris are perfect for families. Children under 5 enter free and ages 5-11 receive discounted rates. We provide child-friendly vehicles with booster seats, plan shorter driving routes for younger children and our guides are experienced at making safaris fun and educational for kids of all ages.
What time do classic safaris start?
Game drives typically begin at dawn (around 6:00 AM) when animals are most active. After a morning drive, you enjoy lunch at a scenic spot or lodge. An afternoon drive from 3:30-6:30 PM captures the golden hour light and evening animal activity. Early mornings can be cool (around 15-20 celsius), so bring a light jacket.
