The Difference

Why choose a photo safari

Regular safaris show you wildlife. Photo safaris help you capture it in breathtaking detail. Here is what sets our photography tours apart.

Expert Positioning

Guides position vehicles with the sun at your back, animals in frame and backgrounds uncluttered. Every stop is calculated for the best possible image.

Extended Sightings

Spend 30-60 minutes at each sighting instead of 5-10 minutes. Wait for the perfect moment: a yawn, a stretch, eye contact or interaction between animals.

Golden Hour Priority

Game drives are planned around sunrise and sunset when warm light creates dramatic images. Silhouettes, rim-lighting and soft golden tones transform every frame.

FAQ

Photo safari questions

Common questions about our photography-focused safari experiences.

What makes a photo safari different from a regular safari?
A photo safari prioritizes optimal shooting conditions over quantity of sightings. Your guide positions the vehicle for the best light and angles, allows extended time at each sighting (30-60 minutes vs. 5-10 on regular safaris), uses specialized vehicles with bean bags and camera mounts, and plans routes around golden hour lighting. Our photography guides understand animal behavior and can predict action moments.
What camera equipment should I bring?
We recommend a camera with a zoom lens of at least 200mm (ideally 100-400mm or 200-600mm). A wide-angle lens (16-35mm) is useful for landscapes and vehicle shots. Bring extra batteries, memory cards and a dust-proof camera bag. We provide bean bag supports and vehicle mounts. Smartphones with telephoto lenses can also capture excellent shots with our guides' positioning expertise.
What is the best time of day for wildlife photography?
The golden hours (sunrise 6:00-8:00 AM and sunset 4:00-6:30 PM) provide the most dramatic lighting. However, overcast midday conditions are excellent for close-up portraits without harsh shadows. Our guides plan the day to maximize these windows, positioning you for backlit silhouettes at dawn and warm-toned portraits in the afternoon.
Can beginners join a photo safari?
Absolutely! Photo safaris are perfect for all skill levels. Our guides offer on-the-spot tips for composition, exposure and focusing techniques. Beginners often find that the structured approach and expert positioning help them capture far better images than they would on a regular safari. We even assist with basic wildlife watching identification.
How many people are on a photo safari vehicle?
To ensure everyone has unobstructed shooting angles, photo safari vehicles carry a maximum of 4 photographers (compared to 6 on classic safaris). Each passenger gets a window position with pop-top access. For serious photographers, we offer private vehicle options for 1-2 people.
